I have a mailing list of customers that I contact every week or so with updates to my software. There are about 12,000 customers on the list. My current host simply sucks and their support is nonexistent.
I’m looking for a host where I can run this mailing list from, these are all customers and this is an update list.
For those of you who have run any sort of large list before, it’s known that no matter what some people will click “report as spam” rather than simply unsubscribing or deleting the mail.
I need a host that understands this and won’t can me simply because an AOL user doesn’t know how to unsubscribe or delete unwanted mail.
My current host has been great about this but their servers/service sucks…
Any recommendations?A mailing list as you describe can get a server blacklisted with popular ISPs, e.g. AOL like you mentioned. This will likely cause problems for all of the other users on that server. For isolation purposes, you are probably looking at a VPS. But no matter what you do, be sure to let the provider know what you are planning to host.I agree. Give the host a heads up. Mailing lists causes problems as it can get a whole IP block blacklisted/null routed. Server providers don’t want such problems and would probably suspend your server right away. Like layer0 said, let the provider know in advance. Usually, it should be okay if issues (abuse emails) are resolved within 24 hours.check with pair.com they have separate mailing list servers (I suppose) which they run as pairlist. In any event, i think your domain would definetly need its own unique IP. Some hosts allow unlimited mailing lists, just take some time to look around. However there will be many small “tricks” involved with having a consistant server not marked as “spam”VPS or dedicated server is the way to go, most web host limit the amount of emails sent per hour.
Thanks for all the great responses. Yes, I know VPS or dedicated with my own IP is the setup I need. That’s fine with me.
Just looking for specific suggestions. I will look into pair and any others that anyone can recommend.
EDIT: Just looked at pair list and they are only taking lists under 10k in size. I’m slightly over that and will continue to slowly grow…so no go on that one.Use this script for a mailing list. It’s the best script.

And this host which will allow you to email so many people.
http://www.hostsgeneric.co.ukStill looking…anyone want to toss host names out here?I would recommend a google search for “mailing list hosting”. Make sure you check for reviews on any service you find.
If you need any advice on responsible mailing, good mailing list software, ect.. Just ask in this thread and I will share what I know. I run several mailing lists ranging from 2,000 - 16,000 subscribers. While it’s impossible to not get the occasional message flagged as spam, I have found ways to limit the possibility.
