I have run AVGuard with TrojanHunter on. I have had no conflicts. I actually consider that they complement each other. I also run SpywareGuard. Works okay.

I do not run two AV monitors at the same time. Like you wouldn’t run the RAV and AVPE monitors together or they would start a shootin’ match.

Perhaps I missed it but couldn’t find it in the documentation — will virus updates happen automatically or must the user do so manually?

Yes, you can but I do mine manually. For that matter, I do all my updates that way.

When I want to update I open the AVGuard, select File, and then select Start Internet Update. The wizard opens and I click on Start at the bottom.

You need to enable the Tools/Scheduler from the Main Antivir program.

Look also under Options/Internet Updater in the Help Menu (context) for further instructions on automatic updates.

In the scheduler help or the main help menu? Actually I can’t find the items you mention in either….

Howdy,

To start the scheduler to allow auto updating:

1. Right click on AVGuard Icon in systray.

2. Click on “Start Main AntiVir Program”. A system test will be done at this time.

3. Click on “Tools”

4. Click on “Scheduler”. Here it will ask if you want to start Scheduler at boot up. Your decision, I don’t any more, I have enough startups.

5. Click on “Help” to read more on the scheduler. When done close the help window.

6. Click on “Insert”. Set up your desired functions!

Manually updating:

Easy way:

1. Right click on AVGuard Icon in systray.

2. Click on “Start Internet update”.

3. Click on “Start”. (Bottom Middle of Window).

4. Wait until Versions have been checked. Be Patient - This can take time depending on server load!!!

5. When updates are available you will be asked if you want to download and install. Click “Yes”. When no updates are available you will be asked if you want to exit.

Not so easy way:

1. Right click on AVGuard Icon in systray.

2. Click on “Start Main AntiVir Program”. A system test will be done at this time.

3. Click on “Tools”

4. Click on “Start Internet update”.

5. Click on “Start”. (Bottom Middle of Window).

6. Wait until Versions have been checked. Be Patient - This can take time depending on server load!!!

7. When updates are available you will be asked if you want to download and install. Click “Yes”. When no updates are available you will be asked if you want to exit.

In the Main Program Window (not the AVGuard GUI) you see these headings above the shortcut icons:

File Options Tools Report Help

Click on Help. In the dropdown box you see Context F1. Click it. You get an alphabetical list. Look for Internet Updater. Click on it. Voila!

My system tray has the white on red AntiVir icon that when I mouse over, brings up a “AntiVir Guard - Inactive” popup. When I right-click on the icon, the first three menu items are greyed out. So I can’t activate nor deactivate AVGuard nor configure AntiVir. I can start up the main program but it doesn’t reference AVGuard at all. What’s up with that?

BTW, when I click on the “About AVGuard/XP” menu item, I receive a “Unable to read AVGuard version information! NP server returned an error.” AVGNT msg window. When I click OK, the “About AntiVir (C) Guard for Windows XP (2000 + NT) - Personal Edition” window pops up!

I get the same thing.

Though my AVGuard is active and I can’t seem to replicate the problem you are having there Ikeb.

Also if I right click the tray icon and select Configuration I get the error “Unable to read AVGuard configuration! NP server returned an error”

Howdy,

Did you install AVPE as “Admin” or “user with admin rights”? AVPE needs to be installed only under Administrator login.

If installed as Admin check to see if “Load Guard with Windows” is checked in AVPE-Options.

If the above doesn’t help, you might want to try a Clean & Complete Uninstall/Reinstall in Safe Mode with Administrator-login.

1. Unistall AVPE with Add/Remove Software.

2. Boot to safe mode with Administrator-login.

3. Delete the AVPE file(if not removed above).

4. Clean Registry of any leftovers(if necessary) with something like Powertools from www.jv16.org.

5. Clean out Temp, wintemp and TIF files.

6. Download AVPE (without a download manager) and run Setup. Remove the checkmark in front of “only new files” and leave the other 3 (Guard, Updater & shell-extension).

7. Stop the “Luke Filewalker scan” and reboot to normal mode.

8. Use Internetupdater to confirm that newest VDFs are loaded.

9. Test with the harmless test file from www.eicar.com . When downloading the test file, the AVGuard should catch it. Also, when you right-click on the downloaded file and “scan with AntiVir” the main scanner will catch it.

Let me know if this helped.

Howdy,

Is it working now?

Nope. The first two suggestions don’t help. I have set up my account as “user with admin rights” and when I check “Load Guard with Windows”, exit options, then look at that option again, the box is now unchecked.

I was really hoping I could get it to work without booting to safe mode. I hate having to shut down my system but it looks like this weekend is it. Also, I have to figure out how to do step 4 and what step 8 implies. I’ve installed lots of apps but this one seems to be especially complicated.

AntiVir is supposed to work on a Win2K Advanced Server system I trust….

Howdy,

Under XP and 2000 installation must be made with Admin login.

Step 4 is there just to be sure that a complete uninstall was made. There are other possiblities to check and clean the registry for anything with AVPE or H&BEDV. As you know sometimes windows uninstaller leaves stuff in the registry.

Step 8 is there to make sure that the newest vdfs are loaded. With a complete download it is possible that vdf updates have been made available since the complete download was made available. There can be several updates on any one day!!

AVPE does not work on Servers, sorry! H&BEDV does have payfor server software though!

http://www.antivir.de/en/products/antivir_server/index.html

Thanks for the response. I guess I can stop scratching my head. I couldn’t find anything saying that AntiVir does not work with a server OS. Any idea why it doesn’t?

:choke: $700 CDN!!! I don’t think so! Granted this license is for 10 users (presumably 10 networked machines) but I have no need to support 10 other machines. I bought and installed Win2K Server just to to allow dual processor operation.

Howdy,

No, I really can’t say. It is probably a $ thing as I know that

and that the server software is programmed with several additional functions not available in AVPE.

“This is a DLL part of Panda Antivirus software. It contains search strings for detecting viruses, but these search strings are not encrypted. Because of this, the file may appear infected to other scanners.”
I have Noton Antivirus 2003. I have heard a lot of good things about AVPE. Should I make the switch, and if so, would I uninstall Norton Antivirus in order to do so?

Thanks for any help you have.

Are you having problems with Norton 2003 or is the license gonna expire soon? If not, I suggest you stick with Norton since you did pay for it ( I assume). If you do make the switch, then I would uninstall norton before installing AVPE( just a suggestion).

Thanks very much for your reply. I think I might as well stick to Norton. If there are any major problems with it, then I’ll probably switch.

Thanks again.

hello sweet_g!

You can do both but all the conservative types will think you’re nuts. Just disable Norton’s RealTimeMonitor and autoupdate features. Install AVPE and use its RTM. As long as you don’t install them in the same folder, there should not be any conflicts. I know the experts at AVPE say that you should not do that but I have been using two AVs for many years online. One as primary with RTM, the other as a backup scanner only. The primary runs at startup. The backup does not. You have to check your startup folder to be sure.

I have run Norton 2002 as primary and AVPE as backup and in reverse. No problems. I did eventually uninstall Norton. I never have more than two AVs on my box at a time.

I started doing this after I had my one and only AV die and I had to go online without one so I could get another one. Not fun.

If you try it this way and you develop conflicts then uninstall one (the backup) and see if the conflicts go away. Another way is to make a backup copy of the install file on a CD, in case you need it later.

It’s up to you. Whatever you prefer.

i like my zone alarm firewall and my grisoft.com AVG V.7.0

AND AVG HAS BECOME 2ND ONLY TO NAV IN OUR OWN POLLS HERE.

AVG HAS BEEN GIVING AWAY THE V.6.0 FOR A LONG TIME.

lately they just began allowing a free thirty day trial of their v.7.0

i posted the download in our download section.

it’s the favorite of mine.

tmov

Thanks Prince_Serendip & TMOV for your replies. I never expected to get so many responses (yeah 3 is a lot 4 me…lol). I’m still not sure what I’m gonna do yet, but thanx for the suggestions.

I’ve tried AVG, but took it off since I didn’t want to run both my AV’s at the same time, but with Prince_Serendip’s suggestion, I may be able to try it again or any other, while my other AV is sorta disabled.

Well thanx you guys, you’ve been a real help.

Also if you want another choice to have as a back-up to NAV 2003, AntiVir or another AV you could try bitdefender (free edition) which is an on-demand scanner only. This way it won’t interfere with another AV resident scanner.

http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/downloads.php?menu_id=21

Thanks NAMOR.

I’m really looking forward to trying everyone’s suggestions. I’ll probably try and let you guys know.

THANKS YOU GUYS.

SWEET G

hello guys

I’ve decided to go with the bitdefender scanner, but thanks to you all for your suggestions. I really appreciate it.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP GUYS

SWEET G

wow this post number is 200,053.

that’s really getting up there.

did paul ever think that there would be such activity?

t

just a sign of how bad/unsecure the internet is getting.

Success is also a magnet. All the members who contribute their time, money and/or energy here are successful at what they do and so too then is this board.

Why do things seem so much worse than a couple years ago on the Internet? Realize that back then there were about 350 million PC’s on it. Now it’s getting closer to a billion! In addition to PC’s, there are cellphones, iPods, Palms, pagers etc. It’s no wonder there are more problems!

I’ve decided to do whatever I can to help make it better, even if it’s only a drop in the ocean.

Thanks for all of your guys’ help. I just felt that I needed another AV/virus scanner when I used the Panda scan and it found about 10 trojans that my Norton AV didn’t even detect. As of yet, the bitdefender has not detected anything. So that’s either good or bad…lol. Well, if it’s not working I could always try AVPE or AVG. Just one quick question…How do i disable Norton’s RealTimeMonitor??

THANKS EVERYONE FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP, YOU GUYS R THE BES’

Check your startup list via start>run>msconfig>OK. Be sure that Norton/Symantec does not load at startup. Then make sure bitdefender does.

To use Norton as a backup scanner, locate the main folder and find the primary exe file for the program. It should say “Application” on the right beside it but there may be several. It will also have an icon on the left. Pick the one with the most bytes. (Don’t worry if you get the wrong one at first. Just toss the icon in your recycler and try again.) Right click on it to create a shortcut. Drag the shortcut to your desktop. Alternatively, if you already have a Norton icon on the desktop, right click it to see where it points. If it points to the primary exe then just keep using it.

When you use it as a backup scanner it may give you a box about loading the RTM. Just click no or cancel. If you need more help, we are here.

hi..

bit defender is not good antivirus tools(comparision with other antivirus software).I read this article last week, but i lost their address.

hello RDB!

Welcome to Computer Cops!

Are you a user with an account on a server? Or, do you have adminstrative rights? Usually you need to be admin to properly configure and run AVPE. As such, you will need to enter the password for those files before you begin a scan.

As for the Windows Swap file, even mine is closed. Perhaps mrrockford can help better here. I’ll ask him.

Best regards

Howdy,

Make sure you have “All Archives” checked in the config in the main program or check marks for the archives you want scanned.

I’m running XP home. All program settings are checked to scan everything. I even booted into safe mode as Administrator and I had the same results as running as a Owner\Administrator. I see Spybot’s is protecting files but AVG and Norton in the past had no problem scanning most of the files except some word macro files set at high security. I dunno?

Howdy,

I am assuming that your password protected zips were set by you. If this is so and you know that they are clean then you can put them on your ignore list, if not then do an online scan of your choice(I use RAV) to check those files.

Most AVs do not scan password protected zips. AVPE just lets you know about the fact that it can not scan those files.

Any other problems let us know.

These files in question are in use by the operating system when I try to open them.

hello RDB!

You can probably scan them when in Safemode.

Safemode for all platforms: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Best regards

Hello,

I’ve got a really important question. I need a good free virusscanner. Right now I have AVG running on the background. But I also heard Antivir is very good. Now, which one of those is better?

What I think is important is:

+ A good resident shield which doesn’t slow down pc performance

+ Must recognize a lot of virusses

+ Good updates and that they are available quickly

+ It shouldn’t eat too much system resources

+ Duration of the scans

That’s it. The last note is because I used to do scans with Kaspersky which took 8 hours to complete. I don’t like that very much… Must be me

i’m prefer antivir..my final download

You tried AVG too? Why is Antivir better?

AVG=The installer seems to disagree with my computer

AntiVir=heuristics were included in the free version

It’s availeble in the on-acess (guard) & on-demand scanner.

Seems, that Antivir is getting stronger day by day now….

both AV have this, but I think Antivir might be a little stronger due to a couple of false positives that it gave me. Nither seemed to slow my PC down at all.

I think both have good detection rates.

I feel that Antivir updates more frequently than AVG

While both AV’s are nice on resources, I feel that AVG is slightly lighter..

Doing complete scans of my system Antivir was faster..

one big plus is that Antivir has 2 official support forums… Just something to think about. I honestly don’t think one is better than the other….

Ok then I’m going to try that one.

I need a really good free virusscanner because AVG just didn’t detect a dangerous keylogger. It’s gone now (kaspersky demo) but I don’t want it to happen again, you know?

False positives? Sorry, but I don’t really understand, what do you mean?

By false positives, I mean during a scan Antivir detects files that are up for grabs (suspicious looking). Such files can be determined to be legit or not be sumitting them to an online virus scan, such as Trend Micro’s House Call.

AntiVir doesn’t run on the Win2K Server platform.

Hello everyone!

For the first year that I had AVPE, it was my backup to AVG. I did not run them simultaneously, always seperately. Then a virus ate the AVG core and AVPE caught it and cleaned it.

Previously, I had no false positives until I enabled Win32 heuristic scans. I turned it off. I don’t have them with the macro scan.

AVG is a good AV overall. I still recommend it, but I like AVPE better for obvious reasons.

It is not “which one is better,” but which one you prefer yourself. I usually advise people to have a backup scanner just in case the primary dies. There’s nothing worse than going online unprotected.

We can check on the Win2K issue and see what can be done.

Except that AVPE documentation specifically warns against installing if another AV is in place.

Sure would be good if AVPE were to allow Win2K Server. I have to use Win2K Server ’cause it allows multiprocessor operation. I think most AV vendors assume that a server implies a networked computer environment where the server is handing out AV licenses, not the case for me.

Yes, that is correct. It’s like in an engineering manual. They always write them conservatively, erring on the side of caution. “Warp 9″ is the limit, or is it? Running two AV’s at the same time often causes conflicts. Running one while the other is “asleep” has always worked for me.

I have an update for Ikeb, on your Win2K Server woes. Apparently, you need to get AVPro, the payware version but that is for the general server issue. I am waiting for an answer to an inquiry I made at the Antivir Support Forum on your particular issue.

I know!! I checked it out. $700US! That includes 10 client licenses but I only need one for the server itself. Thanks for inquiring about this PS!

BTW, not that it’s of any use to me at this point but just how do you put one AV “to sleep”? Kill the TSR?

Yes, actually. Do not use the RTM and use the backup only as an on demand scanner. Never hurts to get a second opinion. Obviously, you do not run it at startup.

Edit: AVPE is especially good as a backup scanner because the RTM is seperate from the Main program. You can do your updates manually and from the Main too.

Hello
Am using free antivir,v.6.24.01.02, have done a couple of on-demand system scans O.K., and seem to have got it to update O.K., but I don’t see how to get it to scan e-mails the way that Norton AV used to before I uninstalled it. Should it be possible to scan emails with free antivir?

PS why didn’t my signature appear here? It’s Windows XP Home,SP1

Howdy,

Sorry, AVPE does not officially scan email. People have reported results with different Email programs (Do not know which, and I never got an answer) that mails were being scanned.

You might try reading about Firetrusts Benign, to see if you could use it:

http://www.computercops.org/c15-Firetrust.html

P.S. The newest AVPE version is available at www.free-av.com and will also be changed soon in the CCSP downloads.

hello benaround3!

Under Preferences in your Profile you will find this:

Be sure it is set to “Yes.”

AVPE does not officially scan email, however it does scan every file that enters your computer. It is only when you download a file (such as an email or whatever) that it is scanned by AVPE.

Hope this helps your understanding?

Best regards

Thank you

That helps, but there’s more questions.

How can I make sure that the emails are being scanned as I download them from the server?

What are the differences between how Antivir scans email. and how my previous system, Norton2002, did it?

Double-click on the AVGuard icon when you are going to download a file. Watch the Configuration diplay “Last File” to see the files being scanned. This is a realtime process.

hellolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

hello! That’s clever! Does that mean that every file that is mentioned in that window has been scanned? In that case antivir DOES scan email then?

So what about emails going out, does it scan them too?

Try it.

Howdy,

Try an online scan like this one:

http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

let it autoclean. Reboot, scan your system with your AV, if it is clean - great, if the problem still exists on your system please do this.

Download “hellojack This!”, if you don’t already have it.

Save it in a permanent folder such as C:\HJT\, double click hellojackThis.exe, and hit “Scan”.

When the scan is finished, the “Scan” button will change into a “Save Log” button.

Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and post your log in the

hellojackthis - Spyware, Viruses, Worms, Trojans Oh My! Forum.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don’t fix anything yet.

When you post in the other forum please explain your problem again in detail so that the experts in the HJT forum will have the complete picture. Someone will be along to help you, but please be patient as the experts are very busy as of late!!

If you start a new thread in hellojackthis - Spyware, Viruses, Worms, Trojans Oh My!, please post back here to let me know so that we can close this thread.

Would it work to do a full AVPE scan in safemode?

Worth a try?

Safemode for all platforms: http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml
