I am a new user to AVPE and have recently installed it on my pc/ w Win98se. After I finished changing my user settings, I decided to test AVPE on the Eicar Website. When I click on the Eicar.Com file, AVPE displays the screen and asks me if I want to Move, Delete, etc but when I tell it to delete or move, my screen turns black and the cursor locks up and I can not ctrl-alt delete to get out and the only choice I have is to shut off my pc.
Anyone have any ideas on what is happening? I have tried installing AVPE a couple times thinking it was a bad install but no luck.
hello cochise1,
Welcome to CastleCops and the AVPE Forum.
That should not happen with the Eicar test file.
It sounds to me that you may have spyware/trojan problems? Screens that go black usually signify such things. Either that or a software conflict.
Have you done a full system scan with AVPE (while offline)? Any problems detected? Please also provide what operating system you are using. Do you have issues/problems with any other programs on your computer?
Best regards
I have done a full scan and found nothing. For the last couple months I have been trying different free antivirus software such as AVG, Avast, and Etrust and nothing ever showed up in any scans.. Maybe some leftover registry files are causing it. Antivir works fine as far as quarantine or delete during a normal scan but just seems to lock up when identifying the eicar.com file direct from the web. I am using Win98SE with Mozilla Firebird as my browser. I did not get a chance to use IE and try it with the Eicar file to see if it is something related to Firefox.
I also have A-squared and Adaware on my pc but do not think that they conflict with Avpe. My screen will go blank and the cursor along with the hour glass next to it. I have cleaned the registy as best I could but now I might have to un-install some of the other spyware software one at a time to see if it resolves the problem.
Any ideas will be appreciated.
Do you have more than one antivirus application running at the same time on your PC? AV’s can conflict if run together and cause all kinds of weirdness.
Have you been cleaning your registry manually, or do you use a program to do that? Registries are extremely fussy. One little mistake can spell trouble.
Do you have anything besides the regular stuff in your Windows Startup folder? Thinking of custom batch files for example? They have been known to conflict with AVPE.
Best regards
No. I am only running one antivirus software and there are no special startup files. I have two common programs, MS Scheduler and Agnitum Outpost fire wall are the only two start-up programs. Avast is what I was originally using and it has no problem deleting or moving the eicar.com file to the quarantine folder.
I just thought of this but have not had a chance to try it out. A few months back, I changed one of my bios settings for the keyboard to enable usb detection even though my keyboard and mouse are ps2. I was having a problem were my pc would not even boot up after installing an external 4 port Belkin usb hub and plugging my printer and mouse into it.
If I am not mistaken, isn’t the pc in dos-mode when AVPE displays a virus detected and is giving you the options on what to do? I was wondering if the keyboard presses are not being interpreted because of the drivers not being available. I will have to check if I returned the setting back to its default.
For registy cleaning, I use a program and am very careful on what I select. I used it to clean the reminants of AVG, Avast, that I had un-installed.
You get a DOS window when there is a virus alert, although the PC is still in Windows.
Have you tried completely uninstalling AVPE and then downloading a fresh copy to re-install it?
We have the most up-to-date version here at CastleCops in our Downloads section. It’s at the top of this page:
/downloads-cat-7.html
To uninstall it completely, you will need to do Add/Remove Programs, then completely clean your Temp folders, remove all registry entries for it then delete the AVPE folder itself.
Install a freshly downloaded copy, install it, update it and see it works any better?
I will give it another shot and see if it works. I like AVPE better than Avast since it uses a limited amount of resources (small footprint) and the scan time is way faster.
Thanks for the help!
Prince_Serendip, thanks for the help. It works now. It was one of two things that was causing it. I un-installed Avast, and manually cleaned the registry of Avast, AVG, E-trust, and all the antivirus programs that I have tried over the past 6 months and then reinstalled Avpe. I also un-installed Agnitum’s Outpost fire wall. I know that Outpost has some features for web content blocking and such and I know that it has given me some problems in the past.
So your guess is as good as mine but the only thing I am concerned about is that Avpe works fine now.
Again, thanks for all the hellp!
You are welcome. The truth is antiviruses rarely get along well with each other, even with ones that are inactive while you use another.
It is rare to have to uninstall and re-install AVPE but sometimes it’s the only thing that works.
Glad to help you and that AVPE is working well again.
As task is complete, closing this thread.
