I have Avpe internet updater set to “Modem connection established by Windows” but it is not able to close my connection after a scheduled or manual update. It tries to but then it is unable to.

I have tried the other two settings also,”let updater establish connection” and also used the defined connection but no luck.

I am not using a firewall program and have the latest version of AVPE on a Win98SE system. Is this a knows bug or do I have to change some settings?

I have only been using AVPE for less than a week and have not been able to figure it out.

hello cochise1,

Welcome to the AVPE Forum.

Are you getting the full update? If so, then just close the updater. I had this problem at one time doing manual updates last year on a slow DSL connection. I would get the update but the connection would remain open. So, I just closed it. If it hangs, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and in Task Manager find INETUPD. It may say it is not responding. helloghlight it and choose End Task.

Hope this helps?

You really should get a firewall. Freeware ones do exist and are quite good. AV applications protect you from viruses and worms. A firewall helps protect you from trojans and hackwares.

Best regards

I think I am getting a full update. Being new to AVPE, I am not sure what is supposed to happen after the update. Does AVPE need a re-boot to install the vdf file. I had it happen one time only where after an update that a box was displayed saying that AVPE was re-booting the pc to install the update but it has never done it since. Does it only re-boot if the actual program is updated or is supposed to re-boot even if the vdf file is the only thing being updated?

Best regards

AVPE has two kinds of updates, vdf files only and program updates + vdf files. You will need to reboot after the program is updated, but not after vdf files only. I understand that the most recent update is a program one and requires a reboot.

Have you tried doing a full scan with it yet? There is another person here who had an abnormally long scanning time (490+ minutes).

I have used AVPE for about four years. What it lacks in update download speeds, is more than made up for by its excellent coverage of trojans and dialers combined with a powerful scanning engine. AVPE does more trojans and dialers than other AV applications, in addition to viruses and worms.

Best regards

I have not done a scan lately so I do not know the answer to it yet.

I have heard that AVPE might have incremental updates in the near future. Have you heard any news as far as when this will happen???

Okay. The last news I heard on the AVPE for the future was posted at this link to the German/English AVPE Support Forum on Nov 3/04.
